CLASSES AT THE ART BARN
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS INTRODUCTION TO SoulCollage® “Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens” (C.G. Jung) SoulCollage® is an intuitive process of self-discovery which uses the “low-skill-high sensitivity” art form of collage to uncover and honor all the facets of your unique Self. The SoulCollage® process, developed by Seena B. Frost, is a flexible, creative, and inclusive tool which gently facilitates self-exploration and self-growth through the creation of a personal deck of collaged cards. Each one of us is a collage of personalities, roles, inconsistencies, challenges, and dreams. Through the SoulCollage® process, you will acknowledge, mine, and honor the jewels of your own life and the wealth of riches you have to offer yourself, others, and the world…and best of all, you’ll have fun doing it! For more information on SoulCollage®, go to www.SoulCollage.com and www.Kaleidosoul.com. Introductory workshops will
be offered on the following Saturdays from 9:30 AM to 4 PM:

Expressive Arts is an approach to art which holds that art-making and creative expression are accessible to all human beings, and that engaging in such creative expression fosters self-exploration, personal growth, and optimal well-being. Expressive Arts experiences are “low-skill-high sensitivity” activities that emphasize the process over the product. No previous artistic skills are required. An Expressive Arts approach further recognizes that a “creative connection” exists among different art modalities, and these connections can be imaginatively explored, leading one to a more integrated and authentic self. For example, the creation of a collage may lead one to express its meaning in the form of a poem, a story, or even a dance. The following Expressive Arts experiences can be enjoyed simply as creative fun, or they can be taken to a deeper, more personally reflective level, as you desire. EXPRESSIVE ARTS CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS Cost: $35 each class; register for 4 classes for $125 ($15 savings). Workshops priced individually. All materials are included for both classes and workshops. Feel free to bring additional meaningful personal objects to use in your projects. DREAM PILLOW: “Dreaming permits each and every one of us to be quietly and safely insane every night of our lives” (William Dement, sleep expert). In this class, you will create a “Dream Pillow” to invoke visitations from your dreamer-self , and to guide your night- flights- of- fancy. Friday January 4, 10 AM to 1 PM OR 6:30 to 9:30 PM SAFE PASSAGE POUCH: Do you
know someone who is about to embark on a real or a metaphorical
journey? In many cultures, a pouch filled with shielding magic is a
necessity for travelers on life’s journey. In this class you will
create a safe passage pouch for yourself or someone you love.
FAMILY TREE IN A BOX: Create
a special keepsake for whatever family you claim as your own. Each
family member will be immortalized on a card, then will be housed in
a hinged wooden box that you will decorate. (Bring photos of your
“tribe”.) SONG OF MYSELF POPPET DOLL: A “poppet” is a charming dimensional paper doll. Sing the song of yourself as you create this imaginative ode to you! (Bring photos of yourself at any age). Friday January 25, 10 AM to 1 PM OR 6:30 to 9:30 PM SPIRIT DOLL WORKSHOP: Almost every culture has a history of using elemental materials such as stone, wood, clay, bone, etc, to make dolls. In this workshop you will create a one-of-a-kind doll that will carry your hopes, dreams, fears, secrets….for sometimes seeing is remembering….Saturday January 26, 11 AM to 4 PM Cost: $65 INTRODUCTION TO MANDALAS: Loosely translated, the Sanskrit word “mandala” means “circle,” but it is far more than a simple shape. Mandalas represent wholeness, and mandala-making can serve as an activity for meditation and relaxation, or even as a tool for transformation. In this class, you will learn about mandalas across time and cultures, explore different mandalic forms, and create an individual mandala using your personal choice of art materials. Sunday January 27, 3 to 6 PM “SECRET GARDEN”
COLLAGE/ASSEMBLAGE : “Within each of us is a secret garden, a
place where our true self exists.” (Natalie Rogers) Give voice to
your true self as you create your own secret garden collage/
assemblage, using magazine images, words, found objects, and other
ephemera. PORTABLE SHRINES: Creating a
shrine is a tangible way to honor a special person in your life,
whether they are living or deceased. Shrines can also be made to
honor an aspect of yourself that you acknowledge or that you desire
to more fully actualize. Have fun transforming an empty Altoid tin
into a pocket shrine that can accompany and bless you on all of your
daily travels. ZEN SEEING, ZEN DRAWING:
“The meaning of life is to see. Once we start to draw, we begin to
see again.” (Frederick Franck) In this class, we will approach
drawing as a form of meditation, using it as a catalyst to heighten
our awareness and reconnect with our surroundings. Drawing as
meditation reminds us of what we know, but constantly forget; it is
not about creating a work of art, but rather about re-creating our
capacity for wonder. WORLD TRAVELER’S DREAM MOBILE: Create mini-collages on recycled CDs dedicated to exotic places in the world that you would like to visit. Your imaginative travel fantasies will dance in the wind and carry you to far-off lands where adventures await you. Friday February 22, 10 AM to 1 PM, or 6:30 to 9:30 PM PAPER MACHE MASK WORKSHOP:
To don a mask is to change character. We all wear masks at different
times in our lives. For thousands of years different cultures
throughout the world have made masks for celebrations, to ward off
evil spirits, to commemorate seasonal events, for dance, and for
self-defense. In this class you will create a unique paper mache
mask for decoration, for fun, or to symbolically express a hidden
aspect of yourself. “PAY IT FORWARD” CARDS: Using an
array of collage, assemblage, and paper-arts techniques, you will
create inspirational cards that you can give to friends, family, or
complete strangers, to spread joy and positive energy in your
universe. JUST FOR FUN CLASSES “GONE TO PIECES” – INTRODUCTION
TO MOSAICS: In this class you will learn the basic mosaic
techniques of cutting tile and glass, adhering to a surface, and
grouting. Students may select from a variety of objects to mosaic,
or bring an object from home that you have been dreaming of creating
into a functional work of art. PLAY WITH CLAY: Learn basic
cane-making techniques in polymer clay, an extremely versatile and
easy-to-use art material. You will choose several objects to cover
with your canes, as well as incorporate the canes in to earrings,
bracelets, hairclips, etc, if you desire. Photos of class projects coming soon! Click here to register for classes. For directions on getting to the Art Barn, click here.
